CROSSHAIRS 15 A John Gibson Interview Written by Jock Saturday, 16 October 2010
One year ago today, this community was left at the altar by the developers of Modern Warfare 2. A year already? Yup. Rob Bowling Day is upon us. It was one year ago on a live BASH cast (BASH 123) that Rob came on to tell us that dedicated servers were a thing of the past, IWNet was going to be our future...oh and modding? Ya, that would no longer be possible. Player config files? Ya...scratch that too.
Well a year has passed and what has changed?
For a start, IW imploded and most of the devs that ripped out our hearts have left the Activision fold. The big production houses, like EA and MW2 daddy Activision, were taken aback by the furor from the PC community and have now made slight changes in their marketing strategies. In what appears to be a huge concession to the PC community, devs making big-ticket games appear to have decided that PC gamers needed dedicated servers after all. BFBC2, MoH:Tier1 and now CoD:BO all have come with the promise of dedis -- in some form or other.
One concession has, up to now, been absent. Modding is still verboten in EA's games and Activision has only promised us this ability. It is not without some irony therefore that on this day, we invited Tripwire's John "RammJaeger" Gibson to interact with our community on a special live CROSSHAIR's cast.
Mr. Gibson is the leading figure behind the new Red Orchestra Heroes of Stalingrad game and what he has to say will shock you. HoS really does roll the clock back, to a time before Rob made his appearance on BASH one year ago. HoS will be PC-centric and that means true dedicated servers, realism, high-fidelity controls, modding...you name it.
